Tuesday 4.10.2016, day of departure to Barcelona

In the plane many swopped their seats with other classmates. For some of us it was the first flight, for example myself. Our plane made its way South and crossed the Alps. It was a scenic view with only a few clouds. We passed the coast in France and made our way over the Mediterranean Sea. After we had arrived in Barcelona, we were greeted by a cloudy sky and an airport much smaller than that of Frankfurt.

After some complications with our bus which should pick us up, we drove to our hostel by the name “Mare de Deú de Montserrat” The building stood in a park-like area which was planted with palm trees. In the hostel the boys occupied three rooms with six beds in each, while the girls had one room with four beds. The rooms were simply furnished and equipped with small bunk beds.

The entrance hall was beautiful with its wall ornaments, a roof formed by a stained-glass window and visible through a hole to the second floor. After we had a meeting about the activities to come in the next week, some set out to visit the local supermarkets to get water and snacks.

At 8 pm we had diner. We had different options for diner including one vegetarian meal. After that some of us gathered on the terrace to enjoy hookah or eat some snacks. It was a fantastic ending to our first day.

Wednesday, 5.10.2016: From the hostel to the harbor mainly on foot

Our youth hostel - Mare de Déu de Monserrat - was located just outside the center, but was well connected to the center by metro and bus. It was an old, almost stately building with a small park, where you could sit on a terrace in the evening.
Mr. Bauer picked us up at 9:00 am at the hostel and explained that we would walk a lot, getting to know a major axis through Barcelona that would take us to the port via Placa Catalunya
We first took the metro for some stations and then walked down the Passeig de Gracia. There are a lot of luxury shops (fashion, jewelery, clocks, etc.) and coffee shops, but also some of the best-known buildings in the city, which are related to the architectural style Modernisme and, in particular, to the architect Antonio Gaudi.

After about 2 hours of relatively relaxed strolling along the Boulevard we arrived at the Placa Catalunya, the central square of Barcelona, which is loved by locals, tourists and pigeons alike and surrounded by striking shops and hotels (FNAC, Corte Ingles, Applestore, etc).

We parted there but were expected to be back at the meeting point 90 minutes later. While some went shopping, others had a coffee on the beautiful place, again others went on a  foto excursion.
After we had met again we went along the Rambla in the direction of the port to the Boqueria, the most famous market square in Barcelona. Here everyone could find his own way again, the meeting point was 30 minutes later at the exit of the Boqeria, from where we went to the area of the old town called Raval. Here we split up for lunch - so everyone could find in this very multicultural district the food, he liked best
Satisfied, we walked together along the Rambla towards the harbor, past some of the transformist artists who charmed some of our classmates
Next to the marina is one of Europe's best known aquariums and a large shopping center with countless restaurants. Here, too, we were able to move as we liked after a few explanatory words and then got together again to the last program point. The Palau Guell was booked for 16:30. There we met Manuel Lopez Naval, the teacher of our partner school, who accompanied us during the visit. The Palau Guell was built by Antonio Gaudi in 1888 for the industrialist Guell. Gaudi was one of the richest men in the world at that time.
After visiting this almost castle-like building, we set off again, the next meeting was dinner at the youth hostel.
Piping away on a shisha in the garden after dinner, we agreed that it had been an eventful day, which gave us a good overview of the layout of Barcelona as well as ta glimpse into some of Barcelona's architectural jewels --- but also smocking feet and squeaking socks

Thursday, 6.10.2016. Visiting our partner school “Institute Val d`Hebròn” and free afternoon

In the morning we met with Mr. Bauer at the hostel. With the metro we drove to the station Val d` Hebron from where Mr. Bauer guided us to the school. We were welcomed by Manuel again, the Spanish teacher who had visited Guell’s residence with us the day before.

We had a little snack and discussed what we would want for lunch – the restaurant we wanted to go to needed to how many wanted certain menus . After that we had a guided tour of the school. The teacher, Manuel Lopez, took us to the first class and explained to the students who we were and why we were there. Then we were shown a small theater room inside the school were we met with a Spanish class. Separated in groups of six or seven we got to know each other.

The topic was to draw something that described our own personality. When we finished it we had to present it. One of each group had to present one group member.

After that we visited a cosmetic class and a class of hairstylists. It was really interesting to see the different classes. The teacher told us about the school system, which seemed quite different from ours. We had a lot of fun.

Friday, 7.10. 2016 The Gothic Quarter and the Sagrada Familia

After a stop in the Church, we went to the Park „Parc de la Ciutadella“, a park in the center of Barcelona with a lake in the middle. Following that we had a long walk to our main destination, Sagrada Familia. We walked in a relaxed manner through the city and then we saw this giant building. We entered the queue while Mr. Bauer got our tickets and audio guides to visit the church from the inside. When we saw the inside of the huge church, our attention was caught by the big white pillars and the beautiful colored windows. With our audio guides we got information depending on the position we were. We were impressed by the architectural masterpiece of Gaudi. After looking at everything, we had free time for ourselves in Barcelona

Saturday , 8.10. 2016 An Excursion to the Beach: Visiting Sitges

In the morning we had breakfast. After that, at 10:30, we took the tram to the train station Passeig de Gracia where we boarded the train to Sitges. . The hostel “Mare de Deú de Montserat” had given each of us a lunch pack, in exchange for the evening dinner that we normally had there. Sitges is a famous town to the southwest side of Barcelona.. It is further away, about 13 kilometers from the airport. There are many restaurants with special menus like Tortilla or Pizza. The temperature was between 21° and 25° Celsius and we were allowed to go everywhere, but we had to be back at the meeting point on the beach at 15:30.

Sunday, 09.10.2016 - Park Güell

Our day started at 10 pm, it was the first day that we had a long sleep. But together with breakfast at this day arrived some Dutch students and they were very noisy. But after breakfast we went to the Park Güell designed by Gaudi. Luckily it was pretty good weather and we saw so many cool designed things, for example a bridge built from sandstone. The whole park was very pretty with some interesting flowers and trees and an awesome view above Barcelona.

There were a lot of people. Sadly we couldn’t visit the main part because it was too expensive for a short trip but on the way we saw a lot of Barcelona. After a couple of hours in the park we went to the subway that took us to the center of Barcelona, but on the way we almost got lost because Barcelona is such a big City. Luckily we found some friendly people who showed us the way to the subway.

The rest of that day we spent in the city buying clothes and sightseeing the town. In the afternoon some of us went to the beach and had a nice view of the ocean

This was our last day in Barcelona – the next day we went home just as we came. The bus picked us up at the hostel and took us to the airport, where we arrived in time to stroll around for some time.
